Visual Narratives

Veblen Effect.gif

Veblen Effect

When apples are on sale at the mall, some shoppers may think that the discounted and special-priced apples are about to rot and not buy them, while at the same time, the expensive apples sold in limited quantities are sought after.

People buy expensive things on purpose.

Zeigarnik Effect.gif

Zeigarnik Effect

In a television series, the protagonist leaves the suspense of "she suddenly lost all her memories." Even after the season finale, viewers will continue to contemplate and speculate until the next season is released, unveiling the reason: "The female lead lost her memory after eating an apple on the table that seemed ordinary but was drugged by the antagonist."

People remember unfinished tasks better than finished ones.

Pratfall Effect.gif

Pratfall Effect

When two otherwise strangers meet for the first time, one of them, who seems indifferent, accidentally meets with an accident. When she fell, her bag broke, and the apple inside fell out. As she fumbled to pick up the apple, she felt wretched. However, at the same time, the other person sensed her clumsiness and cuteness.

People tend to like those who make mistakes.

Suggestion Effect.gif

Suggestion Effect

Before an important exam, a friend suggested I eat an apple, saying it would improve my intelligence and memory. I decided to try it and ate a whole apple before the exam. Although I felt more confident, I didn't do as well on the exam as expected.

Individuals who receive hints or suggestions experience behavioral changes, beliefs, feelings, or emotions associated with those hints.

Decoy Effect.gif

Decoy Effect

The supermarket's customers felt indecisive when the staff introduced different-priced apple packages. One option was the regular package, and the other was the bulk packaging. Just then, the staff informed her about a special offer, which included a more significant number of apples despite being more expensive than the bulk package. After hearing this, the customer chose the bulk packaging because the quantity of apples in the special offer was too much for her to consume, and the unit price of the apples in the regular package was too high.

People compare different options when making decisions, and the presence of a decoy can change the dynamics of these comparisons, leading to a preference for one of the original options.

Bystander Effect.gif

Bystander Effect

On the street, an apple fell out of a girl's bag. Although many people on the side of the road saw the situation, everyone waited for someone else to take action, believing that someone else would be better able to handle the situation. Eventually, a brave stranger picked up the apple, ran to the girl, and handed it to her.

The more people surrounding you, the less likely someone will try to help you when needed.

Hawthorne Effect.gif

Hawthorne Effect

At the supermarket, you are asked by an employee to taste a newly cultivated apple and are asked to fill out a questionnaire. You may give it high marks in the store,

but when you get home, you realize it doesn't taste anything special.

Due to a person’s interest in an experiment, they might behave differently.

Overjustification Effect_edited.jpg

Overjustification Effect

When the parent explains the wrong questions to the child, the child keeps distracted, peeking at the apple on the table. The parent then gets very angry and criticizes the child repeatedly, causing the child to shift from guilt to impatience. This over-criticism triggers the child's rebellious mentality and behavior.

After receiving an external reward, people may no longer enjoy or focus on the task as much as they once did, and they become motivated by the external reward rather than their own interests.

Understanding the psychological effects hidden in our daily lives, being unbound by difficulties or emotions, becomes a person who understands oneself and sees through common phenomena around them.
